To question or not to question...
The BNP want to appear on Question time. This far-right political party have now been validated by the voting public gaining more than 6% of the national vote in the last European election. Polls show that this vote number may actually be replicated or increased in the next parliamentary election. It’s worth remembering that this 6% is only the percentage of those who bothered to turn up for this record low turnout election. But low turnout or not we cannot simply ignore the fact that this party now represents a significant proportion of the UK population.
As a political party that has a legitimacy provided by elected officials they are pushing for the right to be represented in the media. Whether you agree with their political agenda or not (I personally don’t), unfortunately they do have the right to appear on a TV program whose purpose is to allow the people to question politicians on the matters of the day. People do seem to be getting overly hot and bothered about this though. I have seen all the arguments for keeping them off telly but really, who cares if they are on the TV?
Question time is a TV show for political parties to get their message out and let people question their policies and politics, whether you agree with what those policies are or not. The BBC has a duty to give that platform to any political party that represents the people.
That is democracy.
