Bombay Bicycle Club : Flaws(less)

I first saw these young guys on TV at T in the Park when they did a few songs in the studio.

Wasn't so sure about the main man's reflective vocals but something about the way it all gelled together dragged me back to check the album Flaws out, so glad i did, for a start, its a vast departure from their debut, thank god and its abit magical, pleasantly haunting, melodic, bittersweet, odd and it has to be said slightly original. Their particular brand of folk pop really hits the spot. For instance check the first song,  Rinse me Down. Hooky verses break into catchy choruses with sweet acoustic guitars & harmonies and this prevails throughout the 11 solid hits of mature and considered lyrics.

Apparently recorded mostly in one of the band member's bedroom, the production here is excellent with a real warm sound.

With an album still to come from the great Belle & Sebastian in October, i doubt this will be album of the year but certainly a nominee for the Mercury Prize wouldn't surprise me.

The Dead Weather Sea of Cowards/Horehound

I was surprised to see The Dead Weather were back again with their 2nd album, Sea of Cowards after such a lukewarm response to the 1st, Horehound.

So here we are some 9 mths later with the so called difficult 2nd album. Well i'm glad to say its abit of a 5K Klassic. Mosshart & White's particular brand of bluesy garage sassy rock is 35 minutes of just the right amount of soul, attitude & venom that typifies all good rock n roll. The problem with Horehound, was with the exception of a few tracks, good songs were difficult to find. No such problem with the 2nd, the band obviously gelling nicely. The stronger tracks seem to be when Mosshart & White trade vocals which puts abit of sex into the mix.The 1st track, Blue Blood Blues is the perfect example.

With Jack's main band The White Stripes & Alison's The Kills on indefinate hiatus, this is the perfect outlet for both of the them, although i would like to see White vacate the drum stool & move up front alongside the dangerously sexy Alison Mosshart, & watch the sparks fly.

God Help the Girl

God Help the Girl. My new favourite album.

A stunning album written by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian and with 3 female vocalists providing the soaring melodies and harmonies that make this a standout. THe vocals in Come Monday Night by Catherine Ireton are irresistable and the tune is soooooo catchy. The tunes are great and the lyical story that emerges is fantastic, with shades of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood.

Ive been a fan of Belle and Sebastian for a number of years and what I originally loved about them, the way it all sounded like it was about to fall apart at any moment, is missing from their later LPs.  But its back in God Save the Girl,. Its an accomplished piece of work and the joy, pain, misery and confusion in getting together with a loved one that stands out in the lyrics is Stuart at his best and the delivery via the gorgeous vocals and the perfect backing from Belle and Sebastian is a joy to behold.... again and again and again...

Cigarette in McDonalds Happy Meal shock

I was horrified to read about the cigarette in the McDonalds Happy Meal as printed in the Metro newspaper on 26/04/2010.... Terrible story.....

But not because there was a cigarette in the box, as this was obviously a mistake on the part of the person serving the customer, and its a poor show that the Mother is going to sue.. typical money-grabber..

No, it was the fact that this 'Mother' was buying a Happy Meal for a baby in the first place !!!

It didnt give the age of the child, but going by the photo in the MEtro, the child is far too young to be fed burger and chips... Whats wrong with the kid's Mother? Stupid, careless, doesnt give a toss..... Probably all of the above... Looked like a ned on the take.. Maybe it was her own cigarette, or one the kid had dropped from behind his ear after the Mother gave the fag for consumption later. This is going to be one more fat kid with poor diet, no teeth and a drain on the NHS...

Mum has refused a replacement meal and vouchers, an investigation by Trading Standards and wants more done.. Obviously not enough payment offered. Dont give this money-grabber a penny. She sees this as a means to an end and using the kid is awful.

Thanks Mum... Can I have a coke with that.. In fact, make it a diet coke...

The baby can be seen here:

Triptykon : Eparistera Daimones

For those of you with a depressive disposition, this is most definately for you.

Very much carrying on from where Monotheist left off, E.D will not be a major surprise to any of you who appreciated Celtic Frost's last release, but it's possibly darker.

With its dark atmospherics, prickly & bleak guitar tone throughout, it genuinely leaves you with a sense of unease & its pretty pointless trying to pick out individual songs on this slab of blackness because its a long 70 minute mood piece designed to be heard in one sitting, admittedly it's a challenge to get through and at points you really have to pause to come up for air, but I love a musical challenge.

Take the phone off the hook, close the curtains, turn out the lights and wallow in the misery.

Mark Owen - Rehab

"They tried to make me go to rehab and I said ...." ok ok ok.

Isnt it hilarious that Mark Owen of Take That fame has checked himself into rehab following being caught with his pants down. He bleats that its all down to the demon drink lol..!! I read that he says he is unable to control himself when drinking and that he has had a problem with booze for some time.

Boo hoo Mark. Not everyone who drinks is unable to control themselves when it comes to cheating on their wives / husbands etc. It seems to me that he is so far up his own backside that he thinks he is irresistable to women and so being a pop god, he should be able to do what he likes and not think of his wife of a few months and 2 children. What a fool. He should get all he deserves and I hope his wife is strong enough to give him hell, even if she wants to stay with him.

So the question is......... what has he gone into rehab for ??? Drink, cheating ?

This rehab nonsense is just a ploy used by so-called celebrities to deflect anger from their wrongdoings. Public apologies make me sick. Mark Owen publicly saying how sorry he is and admitting that he cant control himself. Nonsense. why are you telling the public. THis should be a private thing for his family. Just like Tiger Woods and his embarassing apology. Grovelling is what i call it and in public, it makes you look like a wee put-upon nonce.

"OOOh im sooo sorry for what I have done".. Shut up.

"I will go into rehab to sort myself out".... Shut up.

"Im a fool, a d***head, a f***head"..... Shut up and stop feeling sory for yourself. Its all your fault... Take the blame.

"Ive been living with the guilt"... shut up. Cant have been that guilty as it didnt stop you from keeping it up all night or stopping you from carrying on the affairs.

"I didnt cheat on Emma while we were married"... Shut up. You kept an affair going for 5 years... this wasnt a on night stand.. This was cheating on a scale where he didnt care what it did to his family.. Can rehab fix that mindset ? I dont think so.

"Wish I had told Emma and come clean"... Shut up.. You are just saying that because you were caught.

Rehab, public apologies etc etc.. its all because he got caught.

Some Take That songs which are perfect for this are:

Relight My Fire

Once Youve Tasted Love

It Only Takes a Minute

Why Cant I Wake Up With You

Pray

Love Aint Here Anymore

Back For Good

Up All Night

Hahahahhahahahahahahahahahaha

High on Fire : Snakes for the Divine

Oh My God ! This is the best opening to an album i've heard in ages, Snakes for the Divine - Curtains up, its all here, the grand title, the magnificent fluting opening, the drums roll, the unpredictable stabs cut with fury, then the one time Sleep guitarist, Matt Pike's whisky soaked and smoked vocals kick in. Nothing much has changed here except everything, the songs are bigger, louder, longer, sharper, heavier and more furious than 4 years ago's Death is this Communion, and that just the first 120 seconds, there's still 6 and a half minutes of bliss still to come.

With barely time to catch your breath, Frost Hammer drops and oh boy does it drop, more like a 10 ton frost hammer, and another unpredictable highlight is the middle eight when the song vears off into this unexpected beautiful rock waltz for 2 minutes, then the song continues and ends as sharply as it began. The tempo slows slightly for Bastard Samurai, but its no less devastating and only serves to broaden H.O.F's sound. Up next is Ghost Neck and from then on to the finish line or should i say the brilliantly titled, Holy Flames of the Fire Spitter, its fire and brimstone all the way. With albums still to come this year from Down and Killing Joke, its gonna be tuff to touch this.

Its refreshing that a band of this nature have the courage of their convictions to follow their own fiery path and no doubt there are other bands on the planet that are doing this kind of thing but i can't imagine them doing it to this high (on fire) standard. Magical Stuff !

I was reading in a recent interview, Pike said he had 4 hours worth of material for this album, of which the producer trimmed it down to 40 or so minutes. lets hope its not another 4 long years till album No 6 hits. Album of the year, and its only February.
