More Scottish Slang

Chattering red toy mouth snappy teeth with feetChattering red toy mouth snappy teethSeeing the post on here about Scottish Slang made me think of all the great old Scottish words and phrases that I just never hear anymore. We used to have such a wide and varied dialect that gave ample opportunity to rip into fifers, chukters and the other modern scottish clans. Of course it's always great having these as a standby to annoy the sassanach relatives when they come a callin' Braw fun.

Here Some of my favourites and what they mean for those who bide awa’:

  • Boughin' - revolting.
  • Clootie dumpling - A type of fruit pudding cooked in a cloth.
  • Dreich - drizzly weather.
  • Drookit - soaking wet.
  • Glaiket - Stupid, vacant expression and pretty much anything else that describes someone as being not all there.
  • Hoachin' - busy.
  • Houghin' - same as boughin’.
  • Shooglie - unstable or wobbly.
  • Yer erse is oot the windae - You’ve no chance.

And another thing, you never see a mannie (old guy) playin’ the mouthie (mouth organ) anymore.

Picture of a mouth organ

Anybody know any others that i have midssed? There must be more vanishing scots slang out there? Surely.

Scunnered (World weary).

SPL title hotting up

As a Rangers fan, i am over the moon with the result today. Its great news for Glasgow Rangers as we go for the title. The loss of the goal difference in recent weeks and falling behind Celtic in points has been causing pressure to build at Ibrox and as such, todays results have given Rangers a boost which we must capitalise on. Beat Celtic at Ibrox in the Old Firm game and we will be in poll position and the goal difference wont matter a jot.. MON THE GERS...

Jade's Funeral

Is it just me that finds it utterly disgusting that the undertaker who looked after Jade's funeral decided to forego their £25000 fee and donated it to her children? The children of a millionaire!!! I find that horrendous and a slap in the face for the normal, hard-working and bereaved family who are forced to use a slice of their inheritance to bury their relative at inflated prices.  Again  this is the face of modern Britain when money is more important than human decency. The undertaker should be ashamed of themselves and the familyies in the locale should avoid them like the plague and let them fall into the obscurity they deserve.

The view of a Rangers fan

As a Rangers fan, I am utterly sickened by the behaviour of Barry Ferguson and Alan McGregor whilst on Scotland duty. Not only does it show their complete lack of respect for George Burley, their team mates and the nation, but it reflects badly on Glasgow Rangers and brings the name of the club again into the spotlight for the wrong reasons. I know it was the players day off, but to be in that state would surely affect your performance in training the next day and therefor, by implication, your performance on the Wednesday. George Burley was right to drop them from the team, but i do think they shouldnt have been on the bench. If they had been sent home, the latest disgraceful pictures wouldnt have happened and Rangers would have been spared any further emabarasment. I dont care whether Dumb and Dumber were sticking their fingers up at the press, the manager or the nation. The fact is they did it and now appear like a couple of typical Glasgow neds, from which Rangers players should never be associated. not only have we had our so-called fans (who probably follow the fashion of supporting England) waving and being born under their Union Jacks and then attacking the British police force, and now we have neddy players who think nothing of public displays of disrespect. Walter Smith should be going through them in private when they appear at Murray Park. The behaviour of Barry Ferguson is not condusive to being the captain of Glasgow Rangers and as such, his position, as far as i am concerned, is untenable.

Glasgow down and out

Does anyone remember the youngish man with the long red hair who used to wander about Glasgow city centre in the 1980's? He was probably mentally ill but most people thought he was a drunk, and he may well have been drunk much of the time.  He wore a raincoat usually, and you'd see him walking around talking to himself all the time. Anyone know anything about him?

VW Beetle

Fantastic VW BEetle in the picture above. Does it belong to the owner of Blog Glasgow? I used to be a member of the West of Scotland VW Club and i own a 1965 Beetle. Although the VW scene isnt as popular as it was, there is still a thriving scene in Scotland and the UK. I go to the Scottish VW show every year, from the heady days of Doune to the new location in Biggar. There used to be a great show at the old RAF air base in Crail where we used to race VWs down a 1/4 mile track which was great fun. VW Action, Bug Jam and Run to the Sun are great shows that are a must for the VW fan and if you can attend this year, do so. I will be going to as many as i can in my bug.

Jade Goody

Sorry to hear about the passing of Jade Goody as I would for any young lady with a terminal illness and a young family. But i find it horrendous the amount of publicity being provided, the hunger of the public to watch her die and the media attention to profit from the public voyeurism. Its a sign of the way this country is sinking. It doesnt seem that long ago when it seemed that everyone hated Jade and the constant media attentions. Then when she is dying live on TV and in full colour in the tabloids, everyone is falling over themselves to grieve. It makes me sick to my stomach. I fear that the next episode of this sitcom will be an embarassing show of grief like that of Princess Diana. Flowers lining the road to the grave, crying in the streets, dour presenters spouting their memories of Jade in mournful voices and large TV screens in the fan zones. Watch this space, the next episode is in the pipeline. Missed the last one? Catch it on BBC iPlayer, YouTube, More 4 and the rest.....

Rangers v Hearts

And another poor result for Rangers in the SPL against a Hearts side who should have really been beaten, but i suppose with having McCulloch and Dailly in the defence, things were always going to be difficult. I dont know why Walter Smith doesnt try Papac in the centre as im sure he would be more suited to the central defence role than Lee McCulloch. Surely we have cover for the left back role to enable Papac to slip into the crucial role of centre back, which after all is his preferred position. PLaying Dailly in both the SPL and the Co-Op cup final seems to me to be utter madness as the guy has been told to find another club and is just not good enough. Crazy.
