More Scottish Slang
Seeing the post on here about Scottish Slang made me think of all the great old Scottish words and phrases that I just never hear anymore. We used to have such a wide and varied dialect that gave ample opportunity to rip into fifers, chukters and the other modern scottish clans. Of course it's always great having these as a standby to annoy the sassanach relatives when they come a callin' Braw fun.
Here Some of my favourites and what they mean for those who bide awa’:
- Boughin' - revolting.
- Clootie dumpling - A type of fruit pudding cooked in a cloth.
- Dreich - drizzly weather.
- Drookit - soaking wet.
- Glaiket - Stupid, vacant expression and pretty much anything else that describes someone as being not all there.
- Hoachin' - busy.
- Houghin' - same as boughin’.
- Shooglie - unstable or wobbly.
- Yer erse is oot the windae - You’ve no chance.
And another thing, you never see a mannie (old guy) playin’ the mouthie (mouth organ) anymore.
Anybody know any others that i have midssed? There must be more vanishing scots slang out there? Surely.
Scunnered (World weary).
