Avengers

Took my two boys aged 7 and 5 to see the Avengers film and i must say, we really enjoyed it though it was a wee bit long for my youngest.

The story is Nick Fury bringing together The Avengers to save the Earth from an attack by Loki and his army of alien beings. Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye need all their super powers to win the day. Loki comes back to Earth and steals an alien power source and threatens to enslave humanity.

The film is fantastic, full of superb action and adventure, whilst peppered with humour and the seemingly endless patter between the Avengers. There is a closeness between the scientific minds of Tony Stark and David Banner, and the nipping of Captain America by Tony Stark, who seems to take great delight in winding him up. Great balance between the Avengers.

I dont want to waste the story, but it is a great film, pulling together all the previous outings by the super heroes, whilst drawing into a complete blast.

Go see it..

West End Festival launches outstanding programme of events

Today, (Thursday, 26 April), the 17th annual West End Festival the biggest festival in Glasgow's calendar was officially launched and organisers outlined a programme of 400 events taking place across the west end of Glasgow, including a series of "mini-festivals".

Established in 1996, the independent cultural Festival draws a strong crowd each year of around 100,000, to enjoy a mix of both free and ticketed events, from music, theatre and comedy to family days, guided walks and children?s events to be held in 80 venues throughout the west end.

It will run from 1-24 June, bringing together the entire business and residential community to generate a hugely positive economic impact for the city of Glasgow. Previous years have resulted in over £1m in sales for the wider Glasgow economy.

Support continues from Glasgow City Council and, in this ?Year of Creative Scotland?, the Festival will also work closely with Creative Scotland. The Gibson Street Gala, the Glasgow Mela and The Cottier Chamber Project - the largest chamber music festival in the UK, will also form part of the Festival line-up.

New partners this year are Stow College, where Festival organisers will work closely with students on a variety of educational and practical initiatives. 5pm.co.uk is also partnering with the Festival, bringing the economic benefits to local restaurants whilst working together to promote the west end.

Ticketed events will be sold online and on occasions at the door. Full details of where to buy tickets are included in the brochure and online. Some venues are selling tickets at reduced prices to attract the student and family market.

Elizabeth Scobie, chairman of the West End Festival commented:

"As ever we are extremely grateful for the support of all those involved and to our sponsors - the festival would not be in its 17th year without them. Now Glasgow's largest and most dynamic cultural event, we hope residents from all over the city and beyond will take every opportunity to attend as many events as possible."

A special fundraiser event will also take place on 18, May at the Glasgow University Union with the theme of "Strictly West End" and a performance from the Glasgow University Big Band. Another first, the "Best Dressed Window" competition will be set to encourage community spirit and involvement.

West End Festival director, Michael Dale said:
"Our annual festival of culture, community spirit and summer fun is back once again! The willingness of local traders, stall holders, artists, musicians and volunteers to get involved never fails to impress and the hard work of all will ensure that this remains a destination festival year on year."
"It has been 17 years since we launched and the calibre of talent involved continues to bring visitors from the world over ? we?re set for another great month."

Double dip recession

So it has been shown that the UK is now in a double dip recession, strike me down with a round of QE.. I dont believe that we ever came out of the 'first' recession and the fiddling of figures was all it was. Does the news really matter? I dont tink so.

I hope the government dont change direction, even with the calls for a plan b or capital spending.. Its the folk who got us into the mess in the first place, such as Ed Balls, who stood and watched the debt pile up and kicked the can down the road for the next government to deal with who are now spouting their Keynesian drivel. Solve the debt crisis in this country with gues what?? More debt..!! Great idea. Is that not what got us into this mess in the first place.

Stick to your plan Mr Osbourne, its taking time but will get us into a better place. We need more cuts in the bloated public sector. Less public sector workers, not more and carry on with the reduction of the benefit system. Listened to a London based news show talking about how unfair it was for the unemployed who will no longer be able to live in London due to the reduction in benefits. Oh dear, so they cant get to live where they want. The workers of this country have to choose their location based on affordability so why should the unemployed or low paid be any different? They were talking about how awful it will be for them to move from the capital as London needs cleaners etc. Agree, but why should i fund their homes in the centre, only for it to go to greedy landlords? Cant they clean in the suburbs? We need to get rid of the dependency culture in this country.

And a fairer tax system would be beneficial. this nonsense of those with the broadest shoulders should take more of the burden is straight from Robin Hood. Steal from the successful triers of the UK to fund those that dont bother trying is a bad idea in my opinion. A flat rate of income tax for all would be fairer, no matter what your income the % loss is the same, and this would force a re-think of the bloated public sector. Private companies taking over some public offices would be the way to go to reduce expenditure and drive down prices. I detest having to fund a failing system, good money after bad and all that just to keep the public worker from the dole. Who says they wont start the private company who takes over the tasks and become independant themselves?

Get a grip Britain.

Give More Campaign Launching in Glasgow today

Glasgow generous and ready to give more to tackle rising need in communities

New research released today shines a light on Glasgow as a giving city and highlights the appetite many people have to respond to increased need in their community by giving more money, time or energy to the causes they care about.

The research was commissioned by Give More, a new independent, UK wide campaign launching publicly on 26 April which seeks to celebrate giving in Scotland, Wales, England, and Northern Ireland, to encourage those of us who can to give more money, time or energy to good causes over the next 12 months and to inspire others to do the same.

  • Over two thirds (69%) of Glaswegians have given to charitable causes compared to 67% of Scotland  as a whole and 62% of the UK
  • 58% of Glaswegians think that “need” in their local community has increased in the last 12 months and 64% think that “need” is likely to increase in the their local community in the next 12 months
  • Over half (51%) of Glaswegians care deeply about health causes and the fewest caring deeply about faith causes (10%). The second most popular cause for Glaswegians is children and young people (40%)
  • 35% of Glaswegians believe they could give more money, time or energy to good causes than they currently do and 17% would give more time or energy to charity if asked
  • Glaswegians feel most strongly (40%) that charities and community groups they give money to do a vital job for their communities, more than any of the other major cities that were surveyed
  • Friends inspire 44% of Glaswegians to give more money, time or energy
  • Over half (56%) of Glaswegians are most passionate about their families, followed by their health (39%) and the fewest are passionate about fashion (7%)

Give More is a year long campaign that is promoting charitable giving across the UK over the coming year. We are asking that people pledge to Give More money, time or energy to the causes they care abour the most.

Today the Give More campaign is launching at the Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow. If you can, come along and make a pledge. If your not in the area you can pledge online by visiting www.givemore.org.uk.

The Weekend WIki

The Paisley witches, Bargarran witches or Renfrewshire witches were a coven of alleged witches hanged and burned in Gallow green in Paisley in 1697. They were accused by the daughter of the Laird of Bargarran. Thirty five men, women and children were accused and found guilty of the crimes and sentenced to execution. The accusation started after Christian Shaw the Laird’s daughter caught a servant stealing. After the theft was dealt with the servant was heard to curse Christian. After a number of weeks of illness it was concluded that it was caused by torment by witches and the curse specifically. The investigation that started with the servant Catherine Campbell and a local supposed witch Agnes Naismith, ended with the execution of the 35 accused. Before dying Agnes Naismith cursed all in attendance and their ancestors. This curse was said to be the cause for any misfortune in the area for generations.

The trials and executions started and were fuelled by information from the Salem witch trials, and ended with the abolishment of trial and execution on suspicion of witchcraft, and act that brought Scotland in line with the rest of Europe. The paisley witch trials were the last mass executions for witchcraft in Western Europe. Christian Shaw went on to found the main thread industry and economic drive in the Paisley area which saw it become a world leader. The mass grave where the remains were buried was marked in 2008 with a tondo horseshoe memorial.

Norway Massacre Anders Behring Breivik

I watched the programme on the BBC the other night about the Norway massacre and Anders Behring Breivik and to be honest, i was horrified by what i saw. The filming showed graphic images of injured Norwegians just after the blast which was terrible, especially that of a woman with a piece of shrapnel sticking out of her head like the horn of a unicorn. Bleugh. Also the terror on the faces of the Police at the scene. They didnt know what was happening or what to expect. And pictures from Utoeya Island were awful. The bodies of those youngsters cut down in their prime to make a point against the government of Norway. Its that part of the atrocity that I dont understand. Surely there was another way to make the point?

Overlayed was extracts from the manifesto of Breivik which talked of mis-direction with a blast whilst moving to the scene of the main part of the attack. It really highlighted the thought that went into the attack. Its no wonder this trial is so interesting. IS it Breivik himself, or the horror of what he did? Not sure. Its obvious he believes in his war against multi-culturalism and the picture of his closed fist salute was an image that will stay for a long time. There was a coldness about it, the heavy brow and piercing eyes of the calm killer.

From Breivik's testimony in court, he shows the confusion that belies his calm exterior. He first said he didnt recognise the court but then said he would respect the death penalty if laid down. In his own words, a militant Christian, killing Christian countrymen and women. No one of the faiths he states should be removed from Norway were attacked. If this was a war against the multiculturalists, this is a different method than that we have seen before. He wasnt trying to start a war in Norway between Christians and non-Christians, he was attacking the future of his country and that is what makes it so compelling.

The world is watching with a strange fascination. Is this the second front?

Fixtures have now been finalised for the World Snooker Championships of 2012 which will take placv from 21 April - 7 May at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. Local player and reigning World Champion John Higgins will be playing against Liang Wenbo, China's no 2 professional player. They will be playing with 16 other snooker aces including Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, Neil Robertson, Mark Allen, Ding Juntiui, Ken Doherty and Stephen Lee. 16 challengers will aim to defeat them and Higgins has been practising hard following an uneventful season so far. The left-handed Wenbo has already beaten John's fellow Scot Marcus Campbell by a close score line of 10-9 and Higgins realises that it will be tough time for him. All of the challengers are reported to be in tremendous form and it should be a very exciting tournament all round,
