So Margo MacDonald MSP, who has Parkinson's disease, has put forward a bill to make it legal for someone to seek help in ending their life. At the moment, its not illegal to commit suicide in Scotland, but someone who assists can be charged with culpable homicide. The bill is to enable those who have a degenerative condition to ask a doctor to assist in helping them end their life.
The doctors, who are placed in an awful position, may refuse if they have reservations on religious or moral grounds.
Margo MacDonald said "This bill is meant to redress that unfairness to give those people the autonomy to exercise some control over how they die to give them the legal right to seek assistance and to protect the people who would give them assistance."
Im not sure how i feel about this as I can see how Margo is in a position and this is close to her heart, but i have an awful feeling that this could be a slippery slope which, if in law, could be challenged by those who are seeking to end th elife of relatives without their consent. I know thats not the point of the proposal, but challenges to law are often made. It would be horrendous to think that our old folk feel threatened by a law made in good faith, but the good faith of the lawmaker is easily altered through the self-serving greed of some individuals.
Im not sure if im against this or not, but im swaying in that direction. Pro-life groups are against it but i dont side with their relentless rallying against abortion and the women and doctors who abort. Discussion is required on assisted suicide and may clarify the proposal and put in place more robust safeguards for those who are in need of help.
